Overview:

The purpose of this symposium is to focus on bariatric surgical topics and clinical challenges especially geared to advanced practice professional (PAs, NPs and CNSs). This symposium will address the topics/challenges of: dumping syndrome and reactive hypoglycemia after bariatric surgery, enhanced recovery after bariatric surgery, revisional surgery after adjustable gastric bands, the use of “adjunct” weight loss medications in bariatric surgical patients, common and uncommon presentation of DVTs/Pes, technology to help with exercise/nutrition compliance and increasing patient motivation for post-operative.

Target Audience:

Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Physicians, and other Integrated Health Disciplines (such as Registered Nurses, Dietitians, Behavior Health Professionals, Exercise Physiologists, Pharmacists, etc.)

Objectives:

After attending this symposium, attendees should be able to:

  1. To describe recommended practice options in the management of patients with dumping syndrome and reactive hypoglycemia after bariatric surgery
  2. To describe “Enhanced Recovery After (Bariatric) Surgery” and review processes and outcomes
  3. To identify indications for revisional bariatric surgery for adjustable gastric band patients with a focus on the evaluation process and outcomes.
  4. To identify appropriate situations for the use of weight loss medications post bariatric surgery and to review strategies for medication management.
  5. To identify common and uncommon presentations of DVTs and PEs and review recommended practice options for evaluation and management.
  6. To explore new technology and clinical factors which can help patients with exercise and nutritional compliance.
  7. To discuss the history and problems of post-operative follow-up after bariatric surgery and identify strategies to increase patient motivation.
