Discription:

This session will focus on high risk and complicated patients as well as complicated clinical scenarios. It will address appropriate workup, preoperative management, and special consid-erations as well surgery of choice for patients with complex medical conditions including advanced or end stage organ disease including, coagulation disorders, super obesity, and ad-vanced age. The session will also address complex clinical scenarios such as a patient with significant reflux and a prior history of Barrett’s esophagus with concurrent premalignant gastric pathology; a patient with a gastric band, with severe reflux and failure of weight loss with the band, and with a large recurrent ventral hernia, and other similar complex clinical scenarios in a case study question and answer format that puts a faculty in the hot seat. At the end of the session participants will be familiar with recommendations and perioperative management of these complicated patients and clinical situations.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of the session, participants will:
1) Be familiar with preoperative workup of patients with advanced or end stage organ disease
2) Be able to mitigate perioperative risks associated with patients with advanced or end stage organ disease.
3) Be able to analyze factors affecting surgery choices for patients with advanced or end stage organ disease
4) Be able to formulate algorithms for managing complex clinical scenarios
