Dr. William T. Cefalu is Chief Scientific, Medical & Mission Officer of the American Diabetes Association (ADA), and President of the American Diabetes Association Research Foundation. In his role, Dr. Cefalu leads the ADA’s Mission team, which is focused on efforts to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. During his nearly 35-year career as a physician caring for patients, a scientist and a health care expert, Dr. Cefalu has been an active leader within the ADA—as a physician member and most recently serving as the editor-in-chief of Diabetes Care, the highest-ranked, peer-reviewed journal in diabetes, from 2011-2017.
Prior to joining the ADA in February 2017, Dr. Cefalu was the Executive Director, the George A. Bray, Jr. Endowed Super Chair in Nutrition and a professor at Louisiana State University’s (LSU’s) Pennington Biomedical Research Center (Pennington Biomedical) in Baton Rouge, La. Notably, Dr. Cefalu also had research support from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for more than 25 years and was the principal investigator for two NIH research centers. In addition, Dr. Cefalu is widely published in journals, books and book chapters, including more than 295 manuscripts and 25 book chapters, and served as the editor of five books on the management of diabetes.
