Insulin plays a critical role in regulating glucose uptake, lipolysis, and a myriad of other metabolic processes. Hyperinsulinemia is well known to track with obesity and metabolic dysfunction including fatty liver and insulin resistance, but mechanisms explicitly linking beta cell hyperproduction of insulin to these pathologies has been evasive. In this session, Dr. Johnson will share novel data providing evidence that hyperinsulinemia plays an obligatory role in metabolic pathologies associated with dietary induced obesity in mouse models and that beta cell mass and hypersecretion of insulin should be a target for treating metabolic dysfunction.
