This session is designed to offer practical information to any provider working with bariatric support groups. Utilizing a multidisciplinary panel, techniques, topic ideas, organizational strategies, resources, and modalities will be explored. While some theory will be presented, the focus will be on application to both adult and adolescent groups. Time will be devoted to both enhancing content for groups as well as addressing process issues commonly faced in groups. We will also provide an introduction to online support groups as well. While the session may be best appreciated by providers with experience as group leaders, newer facilitators will likely benefit as well. Discussion will allow participants to share their own experiences and use the entire group as a resource to address their specific concerns.
Participants will be able to:
- Implement strategies to handle three common behavioral problems in groups.
- Utilize four approaches to attract and retain group members.
- Recognize four different thematic and activity based approaches to support groups.
