Overview

This ASMBS course provides of overview of perioperative care of the bariatric surgery patient. It is designed for Integrated Health professionals including nurses, dietitians, behavioral health clinicians and advanced practice nurses and physician assistants.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of the course, participants should be able to:

  • Understand basic perioperative standards of practice for the bariatric patient population
  • Identify processes to successfully meet the MBSAQIP accreditation requirements
  • Implement advanced medication protocols to control pain and nausea after bariatric surgery
  • Understand the principles of Enhanced Recovery after Surgery and its significance in bariatric surgery
  • Discuss the current prevalence of revisional surgery and its impact on the bariatric surgery process
  • Define higher acuity bariatric patients (i.e. transplant and LVAD) and specific practices and protocols necessary for optimal postoperative outcomes
  • Identify the pros and cons of using robotics for bariatric surgery
