Course Overview and Target Audience:

This symposium will focus on bariatric surgical topics and clinical challenges particularly geared toward advanced practice providers (PAs, NPs & CNS’). The lecture series will include the topics of marginal ulcers, reducing post op nausea, revision candidate characteristics, internal hernias, evaluation of GERD, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, detection of malnutrition, and APP bariatric credentialing.

Target audience: Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Physicians, and other Integrated Health Disciplines (Registered Nurses, Dietitians, Behavior Health Professionals, Exercise Physiologists, Pharmacists, Etc.)

Learning Objectives:

  1. To describe occurrence of marginal ulceration and treatment measures.
  2. To describe medications used to reduce nausea in the perioperative period.
  3. To identify characteristics of appropriate candidates for revisional surgery.
  4. To explore an approach to diagnosis of internal hernia using an algorithm.
  5. To explore evaulation of GERD and its effect on surgery choice.
  6. To discuss evaluation of the bariatric patient with nonalchoholic fatty liver disease.
  7. To identify techniques to evaluation nutrition status and stages of malnutrition
  8. To discuss the current status of the ASMBS project for APP bariatric credentialing.
