Professor Campbell is a nutrition scientist with advanced training in geriatrics and exercise physiology who conducts research on healthy eating patterns, protein-rich foods, dietary protein metabolism and requirements, body composition, weight control, and exercise training. He has served as principal investigator for 40 controlled feeding studies for NIH, USDA, DOD, and industry during the past 25 years while working at clinical research centers at Tufts University, Penn State University, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, and currently at Purdue University. Professor Campbell has served as a member of the U.S. federal government 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee and the 2015 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee. His scientific engagement includes serving as an invited panelist for 14 scientific review committees of five federal agencies: National Institutes of Health; U.S. Department of Agriculture; National Aeronautics and Space Administration; Federal Aviation Administration; and the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine.
