Background

To analyze the trend of overweight and obesity in Chinese adults from 2002 to 2015.

Methods

The data of samples aged 18 years old and above were from Chinese Nutrition and Health Survey (2002), Chinese Nutrition and Health Surveillance (2010-2012) and Chinese Nutrition and Chronic Disease Surveillance (2015). Overweight and obesity were defined according to the Chinese Adult Weight Criteria (WS/T 428-2013) established by China Health Industry Standards Committee, defined as body mass index ≥24 kg/m2 for overweight and body mass index ≥28 kg/m2 for obesity.

Results

The prevalence of overweight in Chinese adults in 2002, 2012 and 2015 were 26.9%, 30.1% and 33.3% respectively. The prevalence of obesity in 2002, 2012 and 2015 were 9.3%, 11.9% and 14.1% respectively. The average annual growth rates of overweight from 2002 to 2012 and from 2012 to 2015 were 1.1% and 3.4% respectively, while the average annual growth rates of obesity were 2.5% and 5.8% respectively. The overweight rate among urban residents in 2002, 2012 and 2015 were 32.0%, 32.4% and 33.7% respectively, and the overweight rate in rural were 21.8%, 27.8% and 32.8%. The obesity rate among urban residents in 2002, 2012 and 2015 were 12.2%, 13.2% and 15.0% respectively, and the obesity rate in rural were 6.3%, 10.5% and 13.1%.

Conclusions

47.4 % of Chinese adults are either overweight or obese and the growth rate is gradually accelerating. The rate of overweight and obesity among rural residents is rising faster than that among urban residents.
