Background

Children are learning in a world filled with screen media. It has become a challenge for pediatricians and parents to balance the risks and benefits of media. The AAP recommends that children younger than 18 months use no screen media. The AAP states it is appropriate to introduce high quality screen media to children 18 to 24 months. For children >24 months, the AAP recommends limiting screen media to no more than 1 hour per day. The AAP emphasizes the importance choosing high quality screen media and regulating quantity. In 2016, the AAP published the Family Media Use Plan (www.healthychildren.org/MediaUsePlan) to provide a personalized tool for families to manage screen media in their homes.

Methods

We found the AAP’s Family Media Use Plan was comprehensive but not friendly for discussion and education provided in the office during time-limited well child care visits. Our goal was to modify the AAP’s Family Media Use Plan into a user-friendly tool that can be used with education provided in clinic. We wanted to improve the quality and decrease the quantity of screen time.Setting: Children’s Physicians pediatric clinics in Omaha, NE (Creighton, Dundee, and Val Verde). Children ages 6 – 18. Intervention: Our Media Use Plan (available in English and Spanish) was used as a tool to serve as a platform for providing education in the office about screen media use and as a tangible outline of goals for a family’s use at home. The first cycle will examine 25-30 patients at 3 clinics starting in January 2018. With assistance, the parent will fill out a pre-intervention questionnaire. The provider will provide education on screen media use and help the family complete the Media Use Tool. One month later, the family will be called and complete the post-intervention questionnaire.

Results

We were able to use the Media Use Plan for 28 families in three clinics. 82% of the patients were able to answer the survey posterior of the initial intervention. Conclusions

Conclusion: This modified tool could be useful for teaching families to use media, education in safety, time use and smart techniques to use appropriate time of media in children.
