Overview:

At the end of this course, attendees will have an understanding of the need for advocacy at the local, state and national level. Each attendee will have a clear understanding of how to speak with policy makers to alter their opinion of all obesity treatments and how to activate their patients to become involved with access to care issues.

Target Audience: Surgeons and Integrated Health

Objectives:

  • Develop a brief overview of factors contributing to obesity and options for treatment appropriate to instruct the layperson and/or legislator
  • Identify a reliable approach to contact legislators to provide knowledge and experience in caring for those affected by obesity
  • Create an action plan to involve patients in every day advocacy activities
  • Evaluate social media as a means to influence policies affecting access to care for those affected by obesity
